Aside from Regina, Robert Carlyle’s Rumpelstiltskin might be the most polarizing character to grace the Once world – season two ran the gamut of showing us the sensitive side of Mr. Gold (in relation to Bae and Belle) while not being afraid to pull back on the innate evil that made Rumple “The Dark One” in the first place. But with the belief that his only son is dead, what can we expect to see when the series returns?
“He’s on his own,” Carlyle explained to us at Comic Con. “Baelfire, for him, is dead, so his life is pretty much over…at the beginning of season three, you get a sense of a guy trying to do the right thing for the first time in many hundreds of years, even if it means his death.”
Watch the full interview below for more, as Carlyle chats about what he thinks might be a possible character journey in terms of his redemption, as well as some hints on whether or not we’ll get any sort of reunion with Belle despite the fact that she was left behind in Storybrooke.
Once Upon A Time returns on Sunday, Sept. 29 at 8pm on ABC.
